![]() Reviews Steeped in Ukrainian traditional music but with one foot firmly in the present, Paris To Kiev would make an appropriate bookend to Loreena McKennitts new album The Mask and the Mirror. From the ethereal quality of Alexis Kochans voice and the tasteful incorporation of diverse musical styles, to the fact that both are independently produced and promoted, similarities between the two albums abound. David McGunigal For something completely different, there's a new collection of beautiful Ukrainian songs issued on CD and cassette by Winnipeg quartet Paris to Kiev. Combining a variety of wind and reed instruments (including some lovely pan flute) this classy recording features the fine voice of Alexis Kochan and should sell briskly amongst the country's sizeable Ukrainian community. Heck, it could even cross a few musical borders I'm a rocker at heart, but I found the cleanly produced material soothing and quite enchanting. |
